Patient information

What to expect before, during and after an appointment. This is general information, not personal medical advice.

Before Your Appointment

Check the date, time and any instructions in your appointment letter. Bring the letter if you have one, and a note of medicines you take if you were asked for it. Contact CDS if the arrangements are unclear.

Preparing for an Ultrasound

Some scans need preparation, such as attending with a full bladder or not eating beforehand. Only follow instructions that were sent for your scan. If none arrived, call 0161 258 0667 before the appointment.

During Your Appointment

The sonographer will explain what will happen. Gel is placed on the skin and a probe is moved over the area being examined. You can ask for the examination to pause. A companion can usually come with you.

After Your Appointment

You can normally return to your usual activities unless the sonographer or your clinician has told you otherwise. Ask if you are unsure.

Results

A written report is sent to your registered GP practice. CDS states that urgent reports are sent within 24 hours and other reports within 48 hours. Your practice will contact you about the result. Please contact your practice, not CDS, to discuss what the result means for you.
